Retrieve Cultural Assets Project

The Retrieve National Treasure Project has been working for the retrieval of the Joseon royal signets that were taken out of Korea to the United States during the 1950 Korean War. These Joseon royal signets were unlawfully removed from imperial palaces by American GIs during the Korean war.

At the time, the government of Korea notified the United States government about the missing signets and the US government fully cooperated and gave much effort to locate the treasure and return it. This incident was covered in one of the articles by the Baltimore Sun at the time and the State Department memorandum on the issue is also kept in Maryland National archive. (Attachment 1: State Department record, Attachment 2: The Baltimore Sun article)

Upon confirming that one of the missing Joseon royal signets is among the LACMACollection, we have requested the return of the item to Korea since 2010. In September of 2013, LACMA acknowledged the fact that the item has been unlawfully taken and made public announcement of its decision on the swift return of the signet.(Attachment 3)

However, since the public announcement, additional royal signets have been found, and the National Homeland Security Investigation unit has confiscated 10 signets and is currently holding total of 11 royal seals including the LACMA signet. Among those seals, one seal is believed to be especially valuable, being the national seal used by the emperor of Korea Dynasty.(Attachment 4: AFT news. Nov. 20, 2013)

As the planned visit by the President Obama to Korea in April of 2014 is approaching, the public anticipation for the betterment of Korea and America relationship as the result of the visit is growing. It is our great wish and plea that the return of the Joseon royal signets to Korea would coincide with the Presidents official visit and thus make the visit more special.

Sincerely Yours
